Srinagar, Jun 4 (UNI) About 280 cases out of the total 478 have been settled amicably by Lok Adalats across the Kashmir valley since May this year, an official spokesman said today.

Since the initiation of Lok Adalat in judiciary, a lot of pending cases have been settled amicably in Kashmir, he added.

The spokesman said the concept has also helped interested parties and claimants to save their time and money without prolonging these cases for years together.

In the Kashmir valley, out of 478 cases, 280 have been amicably settled since May this year, he added. The areas include Pulwama, Kupwara, Pampore, Srinagar, Bandipora, Sumbal and Anantnag.

In Srinagar alone, the spokesman said, a compensation of about Rs 54 lakh was given, while in Anantnag district more than Rs 25 lakh have been awarded under the Motor Accident Claim Act.

District and Tehsil Legal Services committees headed by District and Sessions Judges, who also function as Chairmen District Legal Services Authority were conducting these Lok Adalats, he added.

In order to apprise the people about the aims and objectives of conducting Lok Adalats across Kashmir, the spokesman said, several awareness camps and seminars were organised in different parts of the Valley particularly in remote areas such as Udoosa in Uri.
