Mizoram: Fishery as means of livelihood

Aizawl, June 4: The state's Fisheries department has been taking initiatives to make fishery as an alternative means of livelihood in the hilly state of Mizoram.

At present, the Fisheries department is looking after 13 fishery farms, among which is Tamdil lake, which was visited by media persons on Saturday at the joint arrangement of the Fisheries department and Information&Public Relations department.

Of the 13 fishery farms, those at Tamdil, Lengpui, Zobawk and Ngengpui were being used as fishery training centres.

Since 1998, the Fisheries department had helped to implement private fishery ponds, whose total area is 1450 hectares and had given trainings to 6000 fishery farmers. The department had installed soil and water testing unit at Lengpui for the fishery farms.

The department, at present has two cold storages and two specially designed vehicles for preservation and transportation of fishes, and is working to implement cold storage&ice plant at Zawlnuam during the current fiscal.

More importantly, the department tying up with Mumbai-based CIFE, is experimenting on the possibilities and feasibilities of rearing of lobsters along with fish farming.
