Fashion city proposed for Puducherry

Puducherry, Jun 4 (UNI) Consul General and Trade Commissioner of Australian government for south India Aminur Rehman today said there was a proposal to set up a fashion city here in a joint venture between Indian and Australian private players.

Talking to mediapersons here he said the fashion city was likely to come up in the proposed special economic zone here. It would integrate all textile activites.

Mr Rehman, who later called on Chief Minister N Rangasamy along with Mr Gitesh Agarwal, business development manager, Australian Trade Commission, and held discussions on the role of Australia in various developmental projects in the union territory. He said he was here to explore the potential in the development of tourism, hospitality, airport development, education and port. He would apprise the private Australian companies on the prospect of investing in Puducherry.

Mr Rehman said after the setting up of the office of the Consul General in Chennai four months ago, he had visited some of the southern cities, including Bangalore to identify the potential there and added the Australian Consulate would conduct a series of seminars by inviting those in the industrial fields, including CII.

The first seminar would be in Bangalore on June 11, followed by Channai on June 13, Kochi on June 18 and Hyderbad on June 20.

He said presently 39,000 students from India were studying in Australia.

After the discussions with the Chief Minister, Mr Rehman said Australia could import quality textiles from the Anglo-French Textile mills.

On the fashion city, Mr Rangaswamy informed Mr Rehman that the land was availabile only at the SEZ at Karasur.

Mr Rehman informed the Chief Minister that Australia could collaborate with Puducherry Government in tourism development, education and airport expansion.

Later, Mr Rehman also called on Lt Governor Mukut Mithi.
