Environment clearances to be obtained before land acquisition:Dutta

Kolkata, Jun 4(UNI) Rejuvenation For Environment Nature and United Society (RENU), led by activist Subhas Dutta, has appealed to Chief Justice of india K G Balakrishnan that environment clearances should be obtained for SEZs before land acquisition processes start.

Speaking to mediapersons here today, Mr Dutta said, in his letter to justice Balakrishnan, he pointed out that ''There are vigorous initiatives of setting up of SEZs and the focus point is now earmarking acquisitions. The biggest difficulty in the process is the environment aspects which are totally ignored.'' He also said that various state governments were earmarking land for the SEZs ignoring environmental aspects.

The process of environmental clearance involves preparation of Environment Impact Assessment and obtaining ''No Objection Certificate'' and ''Consent to Operate'' etc.

'''We have also written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that various moves for industrialisation have totally ignored environmenetal practises and norms. Special efforts should be taken to combat environmental hazards in the country,'' he said.

Meanwhile, he said that his organisation, in association with various Chamber of Commerces, would urge the corporates to take environmental responsibilities and work for the betterment of the city.
