Couple arrested for abandoning new born baby on road

Barrackpore, Jun 4 (UNI) Police today arrested a young couple for abandoning their 12-day-old baby boy on road at Birati in North 24 Parganas.

Police said Amit Das (27) and his wife Uma (21) of Birati had abandoned their first child in front of Feeder Road at Belgharia after getting leave from a local hospital on Sunday night. Uma and her son were discharged from the hospital yesterday.

The couple were spotted by a local, while abandoning the baby.

When an alarm was raised, the couple fled the scene. They were, however, caught by some people at Belgharia station and handed them over to the police.

Amit, claimed that he was afraid of his parents finding out about the child as his marriage with Uma, who was in an orphan home, was against their wish.

An FIR was registered with Belgharia police station while the baby was in the custody of Sukanya, a state-owned Home for underprivilege at Bidhan Nagar, police said.
