API caught accepting bribe of Rs 1,500

Mumbai, June 4 (UNI) An Assistant Police Inspector (API), attached to the Special Task Force's Organised Crime Unit of Mumbai Railway police, was caught accepting a bribe of Rs 1,500 from a shopkeeper at Byculla here today.

The accused API Surendra Bhikaji Moraye, who was temporarily transferred to Railway crime branch, Wadala, for a month, was arrested after sleuths of the Anti-Corruption Bureau received a complaint from Mohamed Khan, informed Additional Deputy Police Commissioner (ADPC) of the ACB Vilas Tupe.

Earlier on May 2, the accused had picked up Khan in a case of theft of a mobile chip. The accused recovered one such mobile chip.

But he began pressurising the complainant about two other chips.

However, the complainant told him he had not purchased any mobile phone. But the accused demanded Rs 20,000 from him as bribe to release him. They finally struck a deal for Rs 4,000. Of this, Rs 2,000 was paid and the complainant allowed to go home.

Later the accused went on a leave. During this period the accused filed a complaint with the ACB.

The accused yesterday called up Khan to pay him the remaining amount, he was caught while accepting the bribe today.

The accused will be produced in a Special Court tomorrow, Mr Tupe added.
