AHNs appeals to govt not to take hasty decision on Uranium

Shillong, June 4: The Assembly of Hynniewtrep Nations(AHNs) today urged the Congress-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance(MDA) not to take hasty decision with regard to mining of Uranium in the state.

Speaking at a press statement rpt statement here, AHNs Chairman John F Kharshiing said, ''No degree of prosperity can justify mining and accumulation of highly toxic substances which nobody knows how to make 'safe' and which remain an incalculable danger to the whole of creation for historical or even geological ages.'' He said the Instrument of Accession and the Annexed Agreement signed on December 15, 1947 by the Federation of Khasi states and later accepted by the Centre, clearly states among other conditions, that Land, Water and Revenue derived there from shall be vested with the people.

''Any forceful misrepresentation of the mutually accepted treaty will be construed as gross violation of the rights of the indigenous people,'' he said.
