SHRC orders probe into alleged rape by troops in Kashmir

Srinagar, June 3 (UNI) The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) in Jammu and Kashmir has ordered a probe into the alleged gang rape of a woman by soldiers in Kupwara district.

The SHRC also recommended monetary relief to the victim.

Abdul Ahad Banday of Nagromalpora in border district of Kupwara had lodged a complaint with the Commission, alleging that troops had gang raped his deaf and dumb wife, Shahmali, on May 25, 1993.

Police had registered a case under FIR (118/93). However, Banday said the police had later stopped the investigations.

The SHRC then directed the Inspector General of Police to file a report in the matter.

In his report, the then IGP had submitted before the SHRC in 2003 that the Army men posted at Kegam Kupwara had gang raped Shahmali.

After going through the records, SHRC member Habibullah Bhat recommended relief of Rs 75,000 and immediate investigation of the case by the police station concerned.
