Kolkata, June 3 (UNI) The three-year under-graduate course should be converted into a semester system with more stress on continuous internal assessment than the age-old centralised examination system of the University, opined educationists at a seminar here last evening.

''The current system is meaningless since the students are taught by somebody, their exam papers set by someone else and their paper checked by yet another person. So if the student is dissatisfied with the result, he'll have to run to the court for redressal losing a lot of time,'' said academics who attended the seminar on ''Teaching Chemistry at the Undergraduate Level''.

The seminar was organised yesterday at the New Alipore College campus by the Alumni Association, Department of Chemistry.

''Honours' system must be eliminated in West Bengal as in other states. At the end of the second year, students should be given wide options to chose their 'major', ie, advanced level courses, according to their own career orientation,'' the participants said.

The speakers said exchange programme between students and teachers and amongst themselves should be encouraged with other nearby colleges and universities.

Industries and their R&D should come forward to provide some exposure to the students as to what it really is for those who plan to join industries, they said.

The seminar was attended by eminent professors, lecturers, researchers and a considerable number of current and former students of the college. It was actually a parting gift offered to Dr Ramaprasad Sarkar and Dr Niran Chandra Gayen, who have retired recently.

Different professors shared their views on the present situation of teaching methods and the education system of universities. Many controversial issues were raised including the current syllabus, the examination schedule and the primitive administration system.
