NTPC bags state pollution control award

Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 2 (UNI) The National Thermal Power Corporation(NTPC), Kayamkulam has won the Kerala State Pollution Control Award in the big industries category.

Announcing the award, instituted by the State Pollution Control Board (SPCB), state Health and Social Welfare Minister P K Sreemathy today said the winners were selected on the basis of performance they had achieved in protecting the environment during the past one year.

She said the government had decided to include slaughtering houses in the award category from this year, which was earlier given to industries, hospitals, hotels and civic bodies.

Ms Sreemathy said an eight-member committee with SPCB chairman G Rajmohan as its chairman selected the winners after visiting these institutions.

Though the committee had received applications from various hospitals, it had decided not to give awards to hospitals as they were not maintaining the standards in implementing pollution control systems, she said.

The second price in big industries category was shared by Hindustan News Print Limited, Kottayam and Hindustan Liver Limited Ernakulam, while the third prize was awarded to Appolo Tyers, Thrissur.

In the big industries category Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL), Erankaulm was selected for a special Excellence award, she said.

In the medium industries category, the first prize was shared by Cochin Minerals and Rutile limited, Ernakulam and Plant Lipids (Pvt) Limited, Ernakulam. The second second price was given to United Breweries Limited, Palakkad.

In the small scale industries section the second prize was shared by Harisons Malayalam Limited, Pathanamthitta and Ambadi Diary Products, Thiruvananthapuram.

In the Hotel industries category, Coconut Lagoon Heritage Resort, Kottayam took the first prize, while the second position was shared by Le-Maridian Resort and Convention Center, Kochi and The Travancore Heritage Resort, Thiruvananthapuram.

Attingal Municipaliy and Koilandy Municipality shared the second and third prizes, respective in the civic bodies section, while there was no first prize in this category.
