Mangaldai, June 2 (UNI) At least eight people were injured and a car was set ablaze on national highway in sporadic violence during a 12-hour Darrang district bandh today.

The Asom United Democratic Front (AUDF) had called the bandh against the alleged Congress atrocities on its workers and use of derogatory remarks on the AUDF by the ruling party.

The impact of the bandh was complete in the minority-dominated areas of the district, with all educational institutions and business establishments remaining closed.

However, life was not affected in the other parts of the district, including headquarter Mangaldai.

Additional Superintendent of Police S Singh informed clashes broke out between AUDF supporters and anti-bandh activists at Besimari, about 30 km from Mangaldai, when the former tried to shut down the shops.

Mr Singh said, ''Eight people were hurt in the clash but the situation was immediately brought under control.'' ''Three persons have been picked up and additional forces of CRPF and state police have been deployed,'' he added.

In yet another incident, a car was set ablaze by bandh supporters at Gendachok on National Highway 52.

Traffic was allowed to ply on the highway with police escort and no further incidents were reported.
