K'taka: 20 per cent poll recorded during first 3 hrs
Mangalore, Jun 2: About 20 per cent voting was recorded during the first three hours of polling in the Ullal Assembly byelection here today.
According to official sources, the polling began at 0700hrs on a dull note but picked up later.
So far no untoward incident was reported from the constituency.
Women voters were seen in large numbers at the polling stations.
The polling was necessitated following the death of sitting Congress MLA U T Fareed in April this year.
While both the ruling coalition partners JD(S) and BJP have fielded Mr Aboobakar Natekal and Chandrashekhar respectively as their candidates, the Congress nominated the deceased Legislator's son U T Khader. CPI(M)'s Balakrishna Shetty and Bhraathraj Shetty (Ind) were the other candidates in the fray.
The constituency witnessed high voltage campaign. Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy toured the constituency extensively seeking vote for the party candidate.
The counting of votes would be held on June 5.
