Srinagar, Jun 1 (UNI) Militants ambushed an Army convoy at Sheeri on the 170-km Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road in Baramulla district today, killing a Jammu and Kashmir police personnel and critically wounding five others in a nearby police training centre, police said.

They said two militants were also gunned down in the return fire.

The operation was still going on when reports last came in.

Police said militants fired upon the Army convoy from a hillock as it was passing through the area at 1230 hrs this afternoon.

Troops returned the fire, resulting in a fierce gun-battle during which several bullets hit recruits in the nearby police training centre complex at Sheeri, about six km from Baramulla town.

In the exchange of fire, they said a Jammu and Kashmir police selection grade constable, Anchal Singh, was killed and five others critically wounded.

The injured have been identified as Kulbir Singh and Hemraj from Jammu, Syed Mustaffa (Pattan in Baramulla), Mohammad Syed (Pulwama) and Iqbal Ahmed Khan, a resident of Batamaloo here, they added.

The wounded were rushed to a nearby hospital. Later, two were referred to a Srinagar hospital. Police said two militants were also killed in the retaliatory fire.

Sources said about 600 recruits were writing examination in the grounds of the police training centre when the attack took place.

They said the casualties of policemen resulted due to stray bullets fired during the gun-battle between militants and troops.
