Salem remanded in a day's judicial custody in extortion case

New Delhi, June 1 (UNI) Underworld don Abu Salem was today remanded in judicial custody for a day for allegedly attempting to extort Rs five crore from a contractor here.

Salem, who was brought here from Mumbai in connection with another extortion case, was produced in the Tis Hazari court, after his police remand in the case lapsed. He will be produced in the Patiala House court tomorrow.

He was also sentenced to judicial custody till June 11, in another case of extortion involving a South Delhi businessman Vinay Singh.

He had already been given judicial custody till the same date in the Rajat Nagrath extortion case.

Salem is accused of making threat calls to contractor Ashok Gupta, a resident of Greater Kailash in south Delhi here, demanding Rs five crore in 2002. This is the third case for which he is being tried here.

He is also alleged to have made threat calls to two South Delhi businessmen, Rajat Nagrath and Vinay Singh, to extort Rs 50 lakh from each of them.

Salem is facing trial in eight cases in the country. He was lodged in Mumbai's Arthur Road Jail after his extradition from Portugal in 2005.
