Rs 40 lakhs seized, two arrested

Mangalore, June 1 (UNI) Police recovered unaccounted cash of Rs 40 lakhs and arrested two passengers of a bus in this connection at Uppinangady cross in the district in early today.

District Superintendent of Police B Dayanand told UNI that Additional Superintendent of Police Dr Harsha and his team intercepted a bus coming to the City from Bangalore and arrested Abdulla and Mohammed Shafi and seized money kept in shirts and bags.

Denying that the money was meant for distribution to voters for the June 2 byelection in Ullal Assembly constituency as alleged by the political parties, Mr Dayanand said primary reports reveal the cash seized was hawala money.

Police have also seized three mobile phones. Both of them hailed from Bekalkotte Kalnad in Dakshina Kannada District, he said.
