Rs 40 lakhs seized and two arrested

Mangalore, June 1: Police today recovered unaccounted cash of Rs 40 lakhs and arrested two passengers of a bus in this connection at Uppinangady cross in the District in the early hours.

District Superintendent of Police B Dayanand told sources that on getting a definite clue Additional Superintendent of Police Dr Harsha and his team intercepted a bus coming to the City from Bangalore and arrested Abdulla and Mohammed Shafi and money kept in shirts and bags were seized.

Denying that the money was meant for distribution to voters for the June two byelection in Ullal Assembly constituency as alleged by the political parties, Mr Dayanand said that according to primary reports the cash seized was havala money.

Police have also seized three mobile phones from the arrested.

Abbullah and Mohammed Shafi hailed from Bekalkotte Kalnad in Dakshina Kannada District.
