Enact legislation to regulate fees: CPM

Puducherry, Jun 1 (UNI) The local unit of CPI(M) today urged the territorial administration to enact a legislation to regulate the fee structure in private medical and engineering colleges and obtain 50 per cent of the seats for the government.

Party secretary V Perumal, in a statement here, said since there was no restriction on private educational institutions, colleges were mushrooming here.

Demanding that stringent action be taken against the government-aided private educational institutions for collecting more fees than the prescribed norms, he said action should also be taken against unaided educational institutions which were "looting" the public under the cover of collecting fees.

Mr Perumal also urged the administration to ensure free education up to Plus Two as the government was reimbursing 100 per cent tution fees for medical and engineering students here.

Putting forth several other demands, including starting of a government medical college this year, the Marxist leader said the party would organise a demonstration in front of the Directorate of Education here on June six to press its demands.
