Imphal, May 31 (UNI) A vocational training course for 22 surrendered cadres began today at the State Rehabilitation Centre here, official sources said.

South Assam Rifles (AR) IG Maj Gen B K Chengapa, who launched the training programme, said the training, organised by the Manipur government was a step towards mitigating insurgency and helping the former militants to join the mainstream.

Computer, tailoring and driving classes are some of the courses to be undertaken along with other recreation facilities.

The training would continue for one year after which the former militants would be able to earn a livelihood for themselves.

Besides reforming the militants, the programme would guide them to be financially independent and self reliant, the IG said.

The militants of NSCN(IM), PLA, UNLF and PREPAK said they wanted a secure environment and to interact with the civilians, adding that they would be killed the moment they are moved out by other cadres.

They also demanded a comprehensive policy and absorption in the armed forces.
