Top govt officials caught on wrong foot, convicted

Guwahati, May 31 (UNI) Six top Asom government officials have been convicted after being found guilty under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

A senior official of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-corruption Directorate informed that most of the cases are related to possession of disproportionate assets.

Among the convicted are Assistant Branch Manager of Asom Seed Corporation Habibur Rehman and Marketing Officer of Asom Khadi and Village Gramodyug Board Sarbeshwar Das.

Both have been sentenced to two years, along with a fine of Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000 respectively.

Others among the guilty are North Kamrup DFO Budhin Das, Headmaster of Patia Pathar ME Madrasa Abdul Matin Choudhury, ACF Tanu Ram Das and Upper Division Assistant of Nagaon Abidur Rehman.

All the four have been sentenced to one year, along with fine ranging from Rs 5,00 to Rs 20,000.

Refusing to divulge the case histories of the officials, the official said the accused have been found guilty by a Special Judge under sections 420 and 402 of the IPC.

Besides disproportionate assets, there were cases of other irregularities, including accepting bribes and misappropriation of funds, against officials of different departments.

Cracking the whip on corrupt government officials, the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption in Asom has also filed 82 more cases under the Prevention and Corruption Act.

The cases are lying pending and are under process of investigation and judgment.
