New airport for Navi Mumbai: Cabinet
New Delhi, May 31 (UNI) The Cabinet today gave its 'in principle' approval for construction of a new airport of international standards at Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra.
The decision has been taken in view of the growing passenger traffic through Mumbai, Finance Minister P Chidambaram told reporters.
The present Chatrapati Shivaji airport at Mumbai would be saturated at 40 million passengers. Any demand beyond that can be met only by a new airport, the Minister said.
The new airport would be constructed through public-private participation (PPP) mode.
The Civil Aviation Ministry would work out the details of the airport project, Mr Chidambaram said.
