Srinagar, May 31 (UNI) Expressing solidarity with their brethren in Rajasthan, the Gujjars of Jammu and Kashmir today urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi to set up a high-level judicial commission to probe the ''massacre'' of the members of the community in the desert state.

In a faxed message to the Prime Minister and Ms Gandhi, the Gujjars of Jammu and Kashmir expressed deep concern over the ''brutal approach'' of the Rajasthan government.

They alleged that the BJP government in Rajasthan had ''failed'' to control the situation arising out of ''police atrocities'' which resulted in the killing of more than 15 Gujjars who were fighting for their ''legitimate rights'' guaranteed by the Constitution.

The Gujjars of Jammu and Kashmir said they would go to any extent to provide moral, legal and ethical support to their brethren in Rajasthan who were fighting for grant of the Scheduled Tribes status to the community.

A meeting called by the Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation (TRCF), a leading organisation of Gujjars of Jammu and Kashmir, here today took serious note of the ''grave situation'' in Rajasthan.

The participants condemned the ''brutal and inhuman'' approach of the Vasundhara Raje government.

Addressing the gathering, TRCF secretary Javed Rahi termed ''genuine'' the demand for granting the Scheduled Tribe status to the community by the Gujjars of Rajasthan.

He appealed to the Prime Minister and the UPA chairperson to fulfill the demand as had been done in the case of Gujjars of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh some decades ago.

Dr Rahi claimed that the Gujjars of Rajasthan have been ''denied even the basic rights''. He urged the Gujjars of Jammu and Kashmir to organise peaceful rallies and demonstrations at all district headquarters to express solidarity with their brethren in Rajasthan.
