Home Ministry officials review Rajasthan situation

New Delhi, May 31(UNI) A high-level meeting of senior officers of the Union Ministry of Home took stock of the prevailing situation in Rajasthan here today in the wake of the violence by Gujjars community demanding ST status for the community.

The meeting, chaired by Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta, was attended by the Directors General of the BSF, CRPF and the RPF.

The meeting stressed the need for close coordination with Rajasthan Government to ensure an effective and optimum use of forces.

Later, the Home Secretary had a video-conference with the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police of Rajasthan.

Earlier, Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil told Congress MP from Dausa Sachin Pilot, who called on him, that the Union Government was keeping a vigilant eye on the continuing violence in the state and was extending all possible help to the state Government to control the situation.

Mr Pilot met the Union Minister after visiting Dausa, worst affected by the violence, to apprise him of the situation prevailing there and to urge immediate Central intervention.

Later talking to mediapersons, Mr Pilot said Mr Patil told him that maintaining law and order was the responsibility of the State Government. However, to control the situation para military forces and the army had been made available to the state government. If the state government asked for more assistance ,the same would be extended to it.
