CAG castigates AMU for squandering grant for heritage buildings

New Delhi, May 31 (UNI) The Aligrah Muslim University(AMU) has been castigated by the CAG for squandering the Rs one crore one time special grant for repair and maintenance of its heritage building.

The grant had been given on the condition that the funds will not be diverted for any other purpose, but audit scrutiny brought out that the entire amount of Rs one crore was unauthorisedly utilised on the repairs of some roads.

The CAG in its latest report tabled in Parliament said it was not satisfied with the AMU authorities argument that the grant was sanctioned at the fag end of the financial year, and so the amount was hurriedly utilised on repair of roads which were also part of the heritage building.

The CAG said the university should have sought extension of time for utilisation of the grant rather than spending the whole amount unjudisciously.

''Thus, the purpose of sanctioning one-time special grant for repairs and preservation of heritage buildings was defeated as the grant was unauthorisedly spent on repairs of various roads,'' the report said.
