Chennai, May 31 (UNI) Tamil Nadu BJP President L Ganesan today opposed the alleged religious appeasement policy of the ruling DMK government which has announced reservation for Muslims.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr Ganesan said in Kerala and Karnataka the Muslim community had been considered as most backward and the two states had accorded them reservation considering this.

''In Tamil Nadu, the DMK is planning to provide reservation for Muslims as part of their vote bank politics. If they do so, it would be an injustice towards other Hindu harijan communities,'' he said.

Regarding Madurai West by-election, he said the Janata Party had extended support to the BJP.

The party was ready to cooperate with other parties except the Congress and the Communists, as the two parties were our ''all time political opponents',' he said.

Referring to the issue of printing warning logo on Beedi packets, he said the Centre was pursuing double standards in this case. As it was making such a warning mandatory only for Beedi packets, while cigarette packets had been exempted.

''Both beedies and cigarettes are equally harmful why is the government not making the warning logo mandatory for cigarette packets,'' he asked.

On inter-linking of rivers, he said the BJP would support the state government's stand, which was made clear by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi in New Delhi recently.
