6 students selected for International Mathematical Olympiad

Mumbai, May 31 (UNI) Six students have been selected for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) to be held at Hanoi, Vietnam, this year.

The students have been selected by the Tata Institute Fundamental Research (TIFR) through an Indian National Mathematical Olympiad examination held at different centres of the country.

The selected students are P N Bhargav from Gopalpuram, Abhishek Dange from Pune, Manas Joglekar from Mumbai, Atul Shikar from Darbhanga, Prashant Sohoni from Pune and Utkarsh Tripathi from Kanpur.

The selection of the students was organised at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) here.

Dr C R Pranesachar of Mathematical Olympiad Cell, HBCSE would be the leader of the team going to Vietnam for participating in the IMO. The deputy leader would be Mr Udayan Prajapati of St Xaviers College, Ahmedabad, while Prof S S Sane of Mumbai University will accompany the team as an observer.

The IMO is a unique competition to discover, encourage and challenge mathematically gifted young students all over the world. It was started in 1959 in Romania and is held in different countries every year and has now become a truly international event, in which more than 80 countries participate.
