4 killed in firing; toll rises to 21
Jaipur, May 31 (UNI) Four people were killed and eight others injured when police opened fire to disperse a mob of Gujjars indulged in arson and violence at the police station and tehsil headquarters in Banli town of Sawai Madhopur district and Virat Nagar in this district.
According to official sources, the mob attempted to gherao the police station and attack the policemen on duty. They also damaged properties at the police post and the tehsil office under Banli police station .
The police opened fire, which left four killed and at least four injured.
Meanwhile, four people were injured this evening in a fresh incident of violence reported at Virat Nagar in this district.
Inspector General of Police (Jaipur range) O P Gelhotra said the police had to resort to firing to control the mob indulged in arson.
He said the mob set afire a panchayat samiti building, and a roadways booking centre. In the retaliatory police action, four people were injured and they were admitted to the Sawai Man Singh Hospital here, he added.
With this, the total toll in the violence and police firing during protests, jams and bandhs by the Gujjar community in state since Tuesday, has gone up to 21.
