1995 Bill On Private Universities To Be Withdrawn
New Delhi, May 31 (UNI) A 12-year old Bill to regulate private universities will be withdrawn from the Rajya Sabha, the Union Cabinet was announced tonight to have decided.
The Private Universities (Establishment and Regulations) Bill, 1995 was intended to deal with issues of quality and standards of private institutions.
Pending since 1995, the Bill will be removed from the list of pending bills as the UGC Regulations 2003 upheld by the Supreme Court ''adequately address the concern regarding mushrooming of private universities,'' an announcement said.
It said the Regulations ''also take care of the Centre's obligation in regard to the coordination and maintenance of standards of higher education.'' The Cabinet tonight gave its approval for withdrawal of the Bill from the Rajya Sabha.
