Guwahati, May 30 (UNI) Various militant organisations, in the two hill districts of Karbi Anglong and North Cachar Hill, were resorting to rampant extortions, official sources said.

The Union government had entered into truce with United People's Democratic Solidarity (UPDS) and Dima Halam Daogah (DHD) four years back.

The UPDS has a strong base in Karbi Anglong while the DHD is a force to reckon with in North Cachar Hill district. However, truce with both the outfits bred anti-peace talks factions in both the groups like Karbi Longri North Cachar Liberation Front (KLNLF) in Karbi Anglong and Black Widow group in North Cachar Hill district.

According to sources, in the districts all these groups were now into rampant extortions in their respective strong holds making life of common people, government staffs and traders difficult.

In North Cachar Hills, the Black Widow group, which is alleged by the police to have close links with the NSCN-IM rebels from neighbouring Nagaland, is notorious for serving extortion notices to traders and government servants working in the hill district. The district police rued that a few dared to lodge a complaint with the police against gun-totting ultras.

The Centre recently sent six additional companies of central paramilitary forces to North Cachar Hill district to guard over the Rs 1500 crore under construction gauge conversion project of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) which is under constant threat from Black Widow group.
