Evolve understanding on burning issues: Tarigami

Srinagar, May 30: Jammu and Kashmir CPI(M) Secretary Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami today appealed to the entire gamut of political leadership representing multifarious shades of opinion in the state to evolve a common understanding over the burning issues.

Addressing a mammoth public meeting at Shopian in south Kashmir, he made it clear that the dimensions of the Kashmir issue were so grave and full of complications that no single party, group or individual was in a position to resolve it single-handedly.

Mr Tarigami said the participation of the people of Jammu and Kashmir in the ongoing peace and dialogue process between India and Pakistan was sine qua non, which nobody could question.

''But at the same time, such a participation can serve no purpose, unless a broad understanding is created, which could be projected as an autonomous voice of Kashmir,'' he added.

The CPI(M) leader regretted that a race for upmanship among the leadership had unfortunately projected a picture of a divided house, which had done more harm than any good to the polity.

Referring to the recent round-table conference chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi on April 24, he demanded implementation of the recommendations by four Working Groups.

During the round-table conference, Mr Tarigami said he demanded unrestricted movement of people of Jammu and Kashmir across the Line of Control, facilitating travel procedures, providing adequate and prompt relief and rehabilitation to widows and orphans.
