Corporator attacked outside residence in city

Mumbai, May 30 (UNI) Manoj Kotak, a BJP corporator from Mulund, was today beaten up by a group of 12 people as he was proceeding home in the north-east suburb from nearby Thane.

Kotak, along with his driver and an accomplice, were this afternoon attacked by the people, suspected to be working for Octroi evaders.

Kotak had informed the Octroi officials about the 'Octroi mafia', working in the city, and had provided the vigilance department the truck numbers of vehicles, which were evading Octroi.

The issue of the attack on the corporator figured in the Standing Committee meeting of the Brihanmumbai municipal corporation (BMC) today, where it was decided that members will take stern action against octroi evaders and also on the erring officials, who have been working hand in glove with them.

Standing committee member and BJP corporator Bhalchandra Shirsat had raised the issue along with several other members and demanded strict action. Shirsat told the house that he had met Kotak this morning. The latter had informed him that some trucks had evaded octroi at the Thane check naka.

Meanwhile, a delegation of BJP leaders called on the Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil, and handed over a written complaint against the attack.

Kotak has been admitted to the Wockhardt hospital in Mulund.
