Coke over battery commissioned in RSP

Bhubaneswar, May 30 (UNI) A Rs 122 crore Coke Oven Battery equipped with all modern state-of-art was commissioned today in the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) by its Managing Director B N Singh.

The project encountered several obstacles from the beginning and had come to a standstill during 2006.

The newly commissioned battery, first of its kind in the country, in the category of Top Charged Batteries with Wet Quenching system has several features to control pollution at different stages of operation.

A new anchorage system had been provided to give extra strength and keep the brick work sturdy and prevent damage of brick lining, according to a RSP press release.

The Battery had been provided with leak proof doors with flexible sealing strips to arrest emission from doors. High pressure hydro jet cleaners using pressure upto 600 bars would clean the doors and ensure proper sitting of doors in the door frame to retain its air-tight character.

The environmental control features of this battery would ensure a pollution free charging of coal into the ovens.

The increase of chimney height would ensure a better combustion and effective evacuation of waste.

To prevent suspended particles to go into the atmosphere during quenching operations, the Quenching Tower stack height had been increased with provision of grit arrester, drop arrester and vapour spray absorption system.

In addition to this, top and bottom quenching system (the first of its kind in India in wet quenching system) shall help to keep coke moisture at 4 per cent to suit Blast Furnace requirements.

A computerised heating control system with Level-2 automation has been put in place for adherence to technological norms With the commissioning of this Battery at RSP, nearly 1000 tonnes of additional hard coke will be available per day to meet the requirement of Blast Furnaces, sources said.
