Buta Singh gets new assignment as head of NCSC

New Delhi, May 30 (UNI) Former Bihar Governor Buta Singh has been appointed Chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes(NCSC), a post filled after a vacuum of three months.

This is Mr Singh's first official assignment after he had to resign a few months back following the Supreme Court strictures against him in the context of the President's rule in Bihar imposed on his recommendation.

Mr Singh, whose appointment took effect from May 25, today presided over the first meeting of the Commision with its newly appointed vice chairman, Mr Narendra M Kamble, and three Members-- Ms Satyaben, Mr Mahinder Baudh and Mr Mritunjay Nayak.

The term of the last Commission, which went headless for a long period following the death of its chairman Mr Suraj Bhan in harness, had expired in February.

The newly constituted National Commission at its first meeting decided to take up the monitoring of various organisations connected with the welfare and development of SCs population in the country on regular basis.

Henceforth, the Commission will hold two meetings in a month. It decided to monitor the resolution of local problems in remote parts of the country by the State Government and Departments/authorities concerned through spot visits.

The Commission also resolved to visit all States at least once a year for interaction with the State Governments and various organisations, associations and bodies of the Scheduled Castes for speedy resolution of issues connected with their welfare.
