UP: BSP MP arrested in Lucknow

Lucknow, May 30: Controversial BSP MP Umakant Yadav was arrested today in the state capital following criminal charges lodged against him and seven others including his son in Azamgarh district yesterday.

According to police sources here, Mr Yadav was arrested while he was going to meet Chief Minister Mayawati.

The BSP MP was arrested by the Hazratganj policemen under section 307 of the IPC.

Ms Mayawati had ordered stern action against the MP yesterday after they were charged with ''issuing life threats'' for encroaching a portion of land in Azamgarh.

Mr Yadav, the BSP MP from Machhlishahr seat of Jaunpur, his son Dinesh and five others had bulldozed the house of one Feroz Ahmed in Pallia Udai village of Phoolpur area and encroached the land late on Monday night.

Later, the accused threatened the villagers by firing in the air.

A case was registered against Umakant Yadav, his son and five others and police were making efforts to arrest them.

On Saturday, Lucknow police had arrested SP MLA from Isauli in Sultanpur district Chandrabhardra Singh alias Sonu Singh in an old murder case.
