Birds dying in heat wave conditions

Machilipatnam, May 30 (UNI) Hundreds of migratory birds in the famous Kolleru lake sanctuary have succumbed to heat wave conditions during the last 15 days, an official spokesman said today.

Talking to UNI he said ornithologists had cited increase in day temperatures, lack of proper shelter and drop in water levels as the cause for the death of these birds.

With the water level receding in Kolleru lake and increasing pollution, aquatic source including the world famous Kolleru Murrels, Eels, Ottors and other fish species too were dying.

Meanwhile, during the last one week incidents of enchroachment nights in Kolleru for fish tanks were on the rise. Last year, the Supreme Court had directed to demolish the occupied tanks and restore its natural Kolleru course.

As per Supreme Court orders the collectors of Krishna and West Godavari districts had evicted the powerful fish farmers who were grabbing and extracting crores of rupees from Kolleru fish tanks.
