Andamans prone to child abuse cases: NHRC

Port Blair, May 30 (UNI) Child abuse cases are on the rise in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) member P C Sharma said today.

Mr Sharma said child abuse cases exist in these islands because of its remoteness and inaccessibility.

''Several geographical barriers prevent administrative authorities from reaching the place of crime,'' Mr Sharma said.

He said in many cases due to lack of awareness and support, the affected children were unable to approach the police, court or administration to convey their grievances.

''Child abuse can deter normal growth in children,'' he said adding the National Human Right Commission was emphasising on minimising and preventing child abuse cases.

''We are also focussing on child education, prevention and eradication of child labour, child marriage, child trafficking and prostitution,'' he added.
