Sr Apollo doctor commits suicide

New Delhi, May 29 (UNI) A senior doctor of the Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals here allegedly committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance at the hospital premises on Mathura Road in South Delhi early today.

Umesh Chandra Sharma, Head of 'Emergency Services' at the hospital, was found unconscious by fellow colleagues at about 0800 hrs when they went to enquire about his health, said a senior police official.

''They tried to revive him but without success after which the police was informed at about 0840 hours.'' No external injuries have been found and no foul play is suspected, he said adding that his body was sent to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences for post mortem.

''Initial reports suggest he had consumed some poisonous substance.'' Having complained of some stomach problem last night, Dr Sharma was examined and kept at the hospital but was discharged at about 0500 hours this morning.

At 0600 hours he went on his routine duty and after taking a round of the patients, he went back to his cabin, where he was found lying in an unconscious state on his bed.

A hand-written note recovered from his possession said he was taking his own life and no one was responsible for his death.

A resident of nearby Sarita Vihar Pocket 'G', Dr Sharma had joined Apollo about eight years back and is survived by his wife and a 5-year-old daughter.
