Silver filigree of Karimnagar gets GI tag

Hyderabad, May 29 (UNI) The famous silver filigree work of Karimnagar in Andhra Pradesh has received Geographical Indications (GI) registration, a move that will prevent its unauthorised production.

CII Andhra Pradesh Technology Development Centre (APTDC), in collaboration with the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), Karimnagar, facilitated the registration for the intricate art.

Anand and Anand, a leading law firm from Delhi, provided legal support for the entire activity, a release from CII here said today.

CII APTDC had earlier facilitated the GI registration of Pochampally Ikat and Kondapally toys of Andhra Pradesh.

The tangible benefits as a result of GI registration would be legal identity for the traditional art, prevention of unauthorised production of Karimnagar silver filigree and enhanced brand image in national and international market.

The certificate was issued yesterday by the Geographical Indications Registry (GIR), Chennai, coming under the Union Department of Industry Policy and Promotion. The Registrar of GIR was Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks.

The team of CII-APTDC and DRDA team started working on the project from October 2005, the release said.
