Rights panel demand bail for Marad undertrials
Kozhikode, May 29 (UNI) The Confederation of Human Rights Organisations (CHRO) in Kerala today demanded bail for 139 undertrials arrested in connection with the Marad violence that claimed nine lives in the state on May 2, 2003.
Addressing a press conference here, CHRO Chairman A Vasu said majority of them were taken into custody on mere suspicion and the government should consider releasing them on bail immediately.
Some of them were suffering from serious illness as a result of the prolonged detention, he said.
Stating that there was a conspiracy by certain quarters to arrest a large number of people in the case, the Confederation demanded, among other things, constitution of a committee to probe into the issue.
A report on the condition of the undertrials prepared by CHRO after visiting the jail would be sent to Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan and legislators for their perusal, he added.
