Rajasthan: 5 died in police firing in Dausa district

Jaipur, May 29: Five people were killed and several others wounded when police opened fire in Bala Khedi village of nearby Dausa district in Rajasthan to quell a mob of Gurjars who were holding a demonstration and ''rasta roko'' on the highway to press for the inclusion of their community into the Scheduled Tribes (ST) category here this morning.

Rajasthan Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria here said the demonstrators turned violent and resorted to an attack on the police, forcing the latter to open fire in self-defence.

He said about a dozen people, including seven police personnel, were wounded in the bloodshed.

The Gurjar community has announced to resort to The agitators announced to hold Chakka Jams at four points -- Kotputli on Jaipur Delhi Highway, Peepalkheda and Pataoli on Jaipur-Agra Highway, Kishangarh on Jaipur-Ajmer Highway and Jaipur-Kota Highway.

However, they are holding demonstrations at some other places too.

Police have made elaborated security arrangments in view of the agitation call. Over 30,000 police personnel, led by senior officers, have been deployed in the state to esnure peace.

Over 200 preventive arrests have also been made so far.
