Gulbarga, May 29 (UNI) About 300 people were affected by gastroenteritis after drinking contaminated water from an abandoned open well in Madbol village in Shahapur taluk of this district.

Official sources told UNI that 157 people were admitted in various hospitals while the remaining were discharged after treatment. The condition of all those admitted were out of danger.

The Health Department had taken up all precautionary measures, including clorinating and cleaning of open wells on emergency basis to prevent spread of the disease.

Since drinking water was not supplied to the village through taps due to power failure, the villagers drew water from a nearby abandoned open well which was highly contaminated. Of the total 850 people in the village, about 300 were affected.

District Health Officer Nalini Namoshi said 22 patients were being treated by administrating intravenous fluids in Shahapur government hospital.

The Gram Panchayat office had been converted into a temporary hospital and more than 100 people were being treated.

The officials have dispatched sufficient quatities of Intravenous Fluids and medicines. Drinking water was now being supplied through tankers to the village, sources added.
