Eco-friendly "ECOSAN" toilet inaugurated at School

Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu, May 29 (UNI) An environment-friendly ''ECOSAN'' toilet, the first of its kind in the state, constructed with the help of volunteers of Savior Oser La Solidarite (SOS) of France at St Sebastian High School in Kameshwaram, a tsunami hit village, 20 km from Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu, has been inaugurated here.

The volunteers of SOS had taken up part time jobs during the last three months to raise Rs two lakh to construct the toilet, which was inaugurated here last evening.

Kameshwaram Panchayat President G Kanagasundaram thanked the students from France and SCOPE, a non-governmental organisation for designing the ECOSAN Urine Diversion Toilet (EUDT), which would be a model for the whole state.

SCOPE Director M Subburaman said the EUDT had two blocks one for boys and the other for girls. A sanitary napkin incinerator was also installed in the toilet, he added.

He said the EUDT was constructed at a cost of Rs 2.5 lakh and the school management had donated Rs 20,000.

SOS Coordinator Celine Ben thanked the school management for giving them a chance to help the students in this far away tsunami-hit village here.
