Campaigning reaches crescendo today for June 2 polls in Goa

Panaji, May 29 (UNI) Campaigning reached a crescendo today with the Congress Supremo Sonia Gandhi and BJP counterpart Rajnath Singh engaged in addressing public meetings in North and South Goa respectively, both claiming to form a stable and progressive government in Goa if given a clear majority in 40-member House for the June 2 Assembly elections.

Charismatic BJP leader Sushma Swaraj, Smriti Irani and Nitin Gadkari had also addressed a series of public meetings this evening at different places including the capital city.

Ms Gandhi addressed her first public meeting in the capital two days ago, whereas leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha L K Advani kicked off the campaign much in advance, followed by several others including M Venkaiah Naidu and Navjyot Singh Sidhu.

Other parties including the NCP ruling alliance and the new oufit Save Goa Front, the MGP and the UGDP stepped up their campaigns to woo the electorate even as they were engaged in door-to-door meetings and corner sessions.

The campaign ends at 1700 hrs on May 31 for the June 2 polls which would decide the fate of 202 candidates, with the BJP contesting for the highest 33 seats and the ruling Congress 32.
