AIADMK candidates, independent file papers for RS polls

Chennai, May 29 (UNI) Two AIADMK candidates and an independent filed their papers, as nominations for the biennial elections to Rajya Sabha to fill up six seats from Tamil Nadu opened today.

AIADMK candidates V Maitreyan and A Ilavarasan filed the papers before Returning Officer Naresh Gupta, also the State Chief Electoral Officer.

Dr Padmarajan, who had a penchant to contest any form of elections, also filed his papers as an independent. He filed his papers for a record 83rd time after having done so in various elections.

Of the six seats, the DMK would contest two seats. It's ally, the Congress and the CPI, would contest one each and the Opposition AIADMK the remaining two.

The DMK had decided against fielding a fifth candidate and thus avoided a contest to prevent horse trading.
