Mumbai, May 28 (UNI) Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Standing Committee Chairman Ravindra Waikar today told the House that security was lax at the Deonar dumping ground and sought action against the errant contractor.

During his visit to the dumping ground yesterday, Mr Waikar found that less number of guards were manning the place as opposed to the numbers mentioned in the contract with the private security agency.

He said according to the contract with Vishal Security Agency, it was decided that 132 guards would guard the place in three shifts and prevent entry of rag-pickers and other problems. Of the 132 guards, eight gunmen would be present, the contract said.

''When I visited the place, there were only 18-19 guards on duty and more than 200 rag-pickers inside the dumping ground,'' he said.

Waikar sought strict action against the contractor for putting up a shoddy work and breach of contract. He told the committee members and additional Municipal Commissioner Manu Kumar Srivastava, ''If the contractor thinks that his work is over after getting the contract, then the trend will have to change and strict action will be taken against such contractors.'' He wrote a letter to the BMC commissioner complaining against the security agency.
