Salem remanded to four days police custody

New Delhi, May 28 (UNI) Underworld don Abu Salem was today remanded to four days' police custody by a city court here in connection with an extortion case.

This is the second extortion case involving a South Delhi based businessman for which the Delhi police has been granted custody of the gangster. He had allegedly demanded Rs 50 lakh from the businessman. The case was registered in 1998.

Salem's name had been disclosed during the interrogation of Romesh Sharma, an alleged frontman of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.

Sharma had said it was on Salem's instructions that the businessman was asked to give the money to him.

Salem was also sentenced to judicial custody till June 11 in another case of extortion, involving a businessman, based in East of Kailash. He had been sent on a seven-day remand on May 22, by Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Seema Maini for interrogation over his role in trying to extort Rs ten million from businessman Rajat Nagrath in July 2002.

The don had been brought to Delhi from Mumbai's Arthur Road Jail last week on a production warrant. He was extradited to India from Portugal in November 2005, for his alleged involvement in 1993 Mumbai blasts case.
