Curfew in Bhutanese refugee camp in eastern Nepal

Kathmandu, May 28 (UNI) Curfew has been imposed in the Bhutanese refugee camp at Beldangi in Jhapa district of Nepal following the death of a refugee during a clash with police.

One Bhutanese refugee, identified as Nara Pati Dhungel, 17, was killed yesterday when police opened fire in self-defence after the refugees of the camp attacked a police team, that had gone there to restore orders after a fight among the refugees.

At least six people, including policemen and refugees, are said to be injured.

The fight was between two groups of refugees, one in favour of third country resettlement while the other wanted repatriation.

The refugees are said to be divided on the issue of repatriation and third country resettlement.

The US has said it would resettle around 60,000 refugees in its country. Australia has also shown interest for the resettlement of the refugees.

More than 100,000 refugees have been languishing in eastern Nepal since the early 1990s.

Despite the curfew order, the refugees have continued their demonstration, local media reported.
