Mumbai, May 28 (UNI) Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Standing Committee members in a meeting today told Additional Municipal Commissioner Manu Kumar Srivastava that several civic staffers are engaged in extorting money from people who construct sheds and overheads during the monsoon season.

Standing Committee member and Education Chairman Mangesh Satamkar said, ''In Dharavi, money has been demanded for a 10-year-old structure, citing complaints from residents.'' Mr Satamkar said BMC officials are working hand in glove with social workers and are extorting money from shop and flat owners.

Bandra (East) Municipal Councillor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar said, ''There is an Assisstant Engineer in his area who himself complaints against the sheds and other minor repairs in a particular place, and then demands the money to settle the matter.'' He further added that the same person is involved in many other activities related to the BMC jurisdiction.

Standing Committee Chairman Ravindra Waikar said that this phenomenon is common in almost all the wards and added tha strict action will be taken against the erring officials.
