460 ancient coins found in MP
Sagar, MP, May 28 (UNI) As many as 460 four-sided oblong coins -- made of silver, copper, brass and other metals -- dating back 2,400 years, were found in a broken earthen vessel, Eran of this district.
''The coins bear signs of elephant, Sun, Moon, Swastika, Nandi, trident, tortoise, alligator, river, fish etc. They were possibly also used as ornaments,'' said numismatist Santosh Kumar Vajpeyi who heads the Hari Singh Gaur University's Archaeology Department. The coins were found a month back by the Department's lecturer Mohanlal Chadhaar.
Archaeologists said a mint once existed at Eran and the area therefore yielded coins.
