20 nabbed for power theft

Chandigarh, May 28 (UNI) Intensifying its campaign against power theft, the Uttar Harayan Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVN) has got FIRs registered against 333 consumers of which 20 have been arrested.

''FIRs have been lodged against 333 consumers for theft of electricity and police have arrested 20 out of them,'' a UHBVN spokesman said today.

The Nigam had checked 22,617 consumer premises during the current financial year and detected 2,575 cases of pilferage of power in command area comprising Panchkula, Ambala, Yamunanagar, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Karnal, Panipat, Sonepat, Rohtak, Jhajjar and Jind districts.

He said 2705 meters at consumer premises were found defective during the surprise checking. These had been replaced with new meters.

Most of the detected cases of theft were pertaining to tampering of meters and fake seals, he added.
