Thousands convert to Buddhism

Mumbai, May 27 (UNI) Thousands of Dalits embraced Buddhism at the Mahalaxmi Race Course here today after paying rich tributes to Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution.

The event was attended by several important Dalit leaders including RPI president Ramdas Athawale.

Among those to embrace Buddhism were members of several nomadic tribes under the guidance of Laxman Mane, a celebrated Dalit writer whose work ''Upara'' has earned international acclaim.

On October 14, 1956, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar had embraced Buddhism in Nagpur along with lakhs of his followers.
